Not gonna lie, really enjoyed writing this. In this super secret blog, so so secret I published it on the internet where no one would find it, I reveal the untold secrets of how to look like a vogue model in all your wedding photos, without even trying. I'm the Hampshire wedding photographer who’s been there, done that (a LOT), these are the worst kept not secrets.
1. Do Not Give A Shit.
Yeah, you read that right.
I can personally guarantee you that the easiest way to look like you are having an amazing day, is to have an amazing day. And the key to having an amazing day comes from not sweating the little things. Flowers aren't the right shade of red? Whatever. Can't find your pants? Wear something else. Caterers haven't turned up? Order a pizza. No, I'm not joking.
The truth of the matter is babe, once you get to the wedding day it is completely out of your hands. So do yourself a favour - embrace the chaos. If it rains, just fucking get wet and enjoy it. Your photos will thank you for it.
2. Be yourself.
Yeah yeah, I know you've heard this one before - but don't try to be someone else on your wedding day. If you don't normally curl your hair, why bother on the day when everyone is going to be staring at you? Embrace every beautiful part of you, that quirky laugh, the way your nose scrunches up, or the happy tears. Trust me, the photos where you're really in the moment will be your faves forever, and guests can always tell when you aren't yourself.
2. Get ready by a window
Okay, here’s the deal—good lighting is your BFF. Outdoor weddings, especially here in beautiful Hampshire, give you that dreamy, natural light that’s just perfect for soft, romantic photos - and I swear it flushes out all imperfections! If you’re getting married indoors, a good make up artist will grab the nearest window (or face my wrath when I arrive) and start getting you ready with beautiful light in your face.
3. Ignore me all damn day. Or don't.
Actually don't, I'll be really upset. But what you can do is just let me do my thing. I quite often use people around me - including you - to frame shots. So you've got two options - either smile at whoever you're talking to and leave me to it, or turn to the camera and pull a face - either way you'll look like you're having a great time.
4. Give yourself plenty of 'getting ready' time
Being late in the morning I find is the most stressful thing that can happen. Big old ball of stress early in the day sets the tone for the entire wedding. Bridesmaids can cause stress. Mums can cause stress. And it's not your job to keep everyone to time! So make it clear before what you expect from them (they should be in their dresses before you) before the day comes around, so you can just enjoy.
5. Just laugh. Or smile.
I often say this to guests - if they spot me and look awkward, or I see them turn to a mate and say 'the photographer is staring at me', I usually approach and say hey! Guess how you get a photographer to disappear? Just smile or fake laugh. The photographer gets the shot they want, and they disappear. Same is true for you.
6. Love Your Photographer
Alright, this one’s a obviou!. Choose a photographer you click with (pun totally intended). When you’re comfortable around your photographer, it shows in every shot. There are no awkward feels and you'll feel so much more relaxed. Relaxed you - beautiful photos.
7. Don't Stress.
Yeah, I know I've sort of already covered this one, but I'm throwing it in again. If you stress, everyone will see it, because you are the centre of attention (I know you're not mad keen to be, but it's kind of the deal). And nothing kills a vibe like a stressed out vibe. Just chill babe. Nothing to worry about.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, your wedding is about celebrating love, and that joy will shine through in your photos. So, whether you're tying the knot at a good old Hampshire pub, a rainy beach, or a tent in your Nan\'s garden, just relax, enjoy every second, and let the magic unfold. I'll sort everything else.
See you soon, you legend 📸
